Nearly 2,000 years ago the Roman Empire felt the force of a woman's fury.
After her the romans killed her husband then ignored her rightful inheritance, they flogged the woman and raped her daughters.
But this was no ordinary woman. She was a queen. Gathering a coalition of tribes, Boudica led a ferocious rebellion that saw cities like Colchester, St Albans, and parts of London burned to the ground. Though ultimately defeated, her courage and defiance left an indelible mark on history. And the women of Britain.
In a world that seems to be against women at every turn, Boudica’s rebellion is a reminder that the fight for justice is the right thing to do. Her story is important for women today who face systemic oppression but refuse to be silenced. Whether it’s fighting against gendered ageism, campaigning for human rights, or standing up to oppressive systems or people, the spirit of Boudica is alive in every woman who dares to rise.
And today we should all rise!
Spend some time thinking about what you want to rebel against and why. Then search for groups that share your frustration and join them!
Organise a rebellion lunch, coffee or drinks with a group of workmates to discuss the things that bother you and make plans to make changes.
Coordinate outfits with a group of rebellious women at work, an office full of queens in purple, warriors in red, or, for the ones who want to scare the pants off the patriarchy, a team in leopard spots, tiger stripes and fur!
Write a letter to your MP or representative, I'm sure you've got plenty to complain about.
Tackle an issue that's been bothering you—whether that's contesting a parking ticket, dealing with a work situation or showing tough love to your family—rebellion day's the day to face things head on.
Fed up of the direction social media is heading? Fill it with stories of rebellious women or just tell the world how you really feel.
Refuse to stay silent. Who knows what you will face on the day, but make a promise to yourself to speak up if you see something that's wrong. Don't be afraid to say what you think
Wear a crown, tiara or fantastic hat for the whole day without explanation. You know you're reclaiming your sovereignty!
Go on strike. Take the day off and check out from everything. We could all do with a woman's mental health day!
